Nehalem as 'Core i7' Processor

Intel has announced that the upcoming Nehalem processor will be officially known as the Core i7.

Nehalem has been the code name for Intel's upcoming processors first due in Q4 2008. Nehalem represents a major overhaul of Intel's processor technology and introduces a number of improvements over existing process bottlenecks.

Intel's choice of name seems to be arbitrary but will reportedly fit into the naming scheme for the full line of chips, as explained by TGDaily.com:

Intel told us that “i7” was simply chosen because it is “short and sweet”. The company showed some understanding for our confusion over this name choice and promised that i7 would make sense down the road when additional new identifiers are introduced.

Intel is expected to reveal more information about the Core i7 at the Intel Developer Forum on August 19th. At the conference, Intel will also detail a new energy saving technique in the i7:

Intel would not reveal the nature of the new energy efficiency feature in the Core i7 chips. A company spokesman said it is not a direct evolution of the Intel's SpeedStep technology that automates frequency scaling based on workloads.

While the first of the Core i7 processors will be introduced in Q4 2008, mainstream desktop and mobile versions of the processor will be delayed until well into 2009.

Super Mario War 1.8 Beta 1 Released!

SMW is a fun, addicting open-source multiplayer game tribute to Nintendo.

Image

Super Mario War is a Super Mario multiplayer game.
The goal is to stomp as many other Marios as possible to win the game.
It's a tribute to Nintendo and the game Mario War by Samuele Poletto.

The game uses artwork and sounds from Nintendo games. We hope that this noncommercial fangame qualifies as fair use work. We just wanted to create this game to show how much we adore Nintendo's characters and games.

Microsoft wants to buy FAST Search Engine for 1.2 billion

Microsoft offers 1.2 billion to buy FAST (Fast Search and Transfer) enterprise search engine last tuesday.

Microsoft is likely to raise a ruckus in enterprise search and force consolidation among FAST’s rivals. Microsoft can bundle FAST with its Microsoft Office SharePoint Server and probably poach some features for its consumer search if warranted. And Microsoft will gladly take FAST’s search engineering talent. I did an overview of enterprise search last year and highlighted how long it takes to deploy. In a nutshell, enterprise search is more complicated than slapping in a search appliance because you have unstructured data.

In a statement, Jeff Raikes, president of Microsoft’s Business Division, said:

“Until now organizations have been forced to choose between powerful, high-end search technologies or more mainstream, infrastructure solutions. The combination of Microsoft and FAST gives customers a new choice: a single vendor with solutions that span the full range of customer needs.”

Edit Ofcscan.ini file.

**On Windows.95/98 machines it is usually in C:\Windows\Ofcscan.ini

1) Open the Ofcscan.ini file using notepad search for the [INI_CLIENT_SECTION]
2) Find the line reading Uninstall_Pwd= and type a # at the beginning of the line to comment it out.
3) Insert a new line saying Uninstall_Pwd=70

Running IE On Linux -- And Running Windows XP For Free (Sort Of)

Yes, I know the headline sounds like the fodder for a joke: "Run IE on Linux? Why would you want to?" But there are circumstances where it's unavoidable -- compatibility testing, or accessing IE-only sites without dual-booting -- and in the last few weeks I've come across a couple of interesting approaches to this issue.

The first approach is a script called IEs4Linux by Brazilian programmer Sérgio Luís Lopes Júnior, which is essentially a way to install IE from its original cabinet files and run it under Wine. Specific instructions are included for all the major distributions -- Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, SUSE, PCLinuxOS, and others -- and each step of the instructions are spelled out in clear detail. IE7 isn't fully supported, but a beta version of the script accomplishes a nifty trick -- it places the IE7 rendering engine inside the IE6 user interface. Keep in mind that in the disclaimer for the project notes, it's mentioned that you need to have at least one valid Windows license to install IE to be in full compliance with the EULA. (I also imagine it's now that much easier to pull all this off since IE7 no longer requires WGA to work.)

Another way to run IE on Linux comes courtesy of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) itself, sort of. If you're running Microsoft Virtual PC or using VMWare (which can convert Microsoft's .VHD format) you can download a virtual machine image from Microsoft that contains a preactivated installation of Windows XP with Service Pack 2, preloaded with your choice of Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7, and use it in the VMWare Player. The image in question is timed to expire on Dec. 7, 2007, but I've seen previous editions of this VHD offered before, and each time it's about to expire Microsoft has offered a refreshed version which times out in about 4-6 months.

If you've got other approaches to this particular problem (sorry, "just use Firefox" doesn't count here), feel free to share them.
